Working as a teacher at DMM Eikaiwa pt.2

While working as a DMM teacher I have had a wide range of experiences. Most of them were positive, but the negative ones have stuck to me the most. In this blog post, I’ll try to summarize the long article which I’ve previously posted.

– DMM Eikaiwa is a business company interested in making money, it’s not a school,
– Timing of the lessons is not really good since it’s not productive to study overnight after a busy day,
– There’s no curriculum,
– Testing is performed in such a way that students believe that they did good, although their language skills are not improving,
– The student’s environment is not always suitable for studying and can be noisy and distracting,
– Students can get away after harassing their teachers, even sexual harassment is sometimes tolerated,
– “teachers” at DMM are not always certified teachers, nor do they have previous experience in teaching,
– DMM commercials are spreading lies,
– People with poor language skills are working as teachers, and saying wrong things to the students,
– Management of the company is very strict to the teachers and the salary is very low, and
– The company itself is interested in leading the students into thinking that they are learning English without breaking a sweat, in a fun way, with the aid of a friendly and smiling teacher. They are not actually helping their students to learn English since the materials and lack of proper teaching skills of the teachers are doing everything but teaching properly.

My advice to the teachers : find a better school with higher salary, there are a ton of them online, DMM is not the only one.
My advice to the students: find a real teacher and go to a proper school! You cannot achieve high score overnight!

  1. What are the online schools you suggest for teachers, please? And, yes, it is stated in the contract that you are not allowed to work for any other online school for a year after you have left them.

  2. Hi! I have been working for them for a few months now. Initially, a lot of students were booking during the peak hours; however, I’ve only been getting only a couple per day this week. Is their a season when students don’t book classes? Summer perhaps?

  3. Oh, and let’s not forget those blasted lesson notes we are forced to write even though students are not reading them. Some of the people I worked with told me that I do not have to bother with the notes, because they do not read them…. I wish it were that easy *cries*
